Summary of the Proposed Research:
Cancer immunotherapy using immune checkpoint inhibitors has revolutionized cancer treatment in recent years. Despite this breakthrough, the effectiveness of these therapies can vary significantly among patients. As of 2019, it was estimated that approximately 40% of solid cancer patients were eligible for these treatments, with eligibility continuing to expand since then. Nevertheless, identifying which patients will benefit the most from these therapies remains a significant challenge in oncology.
Immunotherapy uses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer, by helping it to recognize and attack cancer cells. One main type of immune system cell is called a T cell. T cells have proteins on them that turn on an immune response and other proteins that turn it off. These are called checkpoint proteins. Checkpoint inhibitors are a type of immunotherapy that works by blocking the checkpoint proteins that turn the immune system off, and thereby enabling the T cells to attack the cancer cells.
While the mechanism of immunotherapy is now well understood, its effectiveness can be influenced by various factors, such as the patient’s overall health. Recent research has highlighted the complex relationship between a patient’s physical condition and their response to cancer immunotherapy. One particularly intriguing area of study is the impact of body weight on treatment outcomes.
Obesity has been reported to influence cancer outcomes, with some studies suggesting an “obesity paradox” where overweight or obese patients have better survival compared to those with normal weight. This study aims to investigate the impact of body mass index (BMI) on the outcomes of cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Our analysis approach will provide a comprehensive understanding of how BMI affects treatment outcomes, allowing for a more nuanced interpretation of the relationship between BMI and immunotherapy effectiveness.
The ultimate goal of this research is is to provide evidence-based advice to cancer patients undergoing immunotherapy regarding their lifestyle and body weight management. By understanding the optimal BMI range for immunotherapy effectiveness, it is hoped that patients and their healthcare providers will be empowered to make informed decisions about treatment and overall health. This study has the potential to improve personalized cancer care by considering individual patient characteristics like BMI. It is anticipated that the findings will contribute to better patient outcomes and quality of life for those battling cancer.
