Vivli Offers Model of Sustainable Data Sharing

The sharing of clinical trial data offers researchers opportunities for validating key findings and avoiding the cost of duplicative studies, while unleashing innovations that can culminate in life-saving care. Advances in technical infrastructure mean that biomedical researchers now have more data at their fingertips than ever before, but challenges remain. In their post on Health Affairs Blog, Kim McCleary and Kristin Schneeman name the challenge of ensuring that data sharing platforms are financially and economically sustainable one of the medical research and development issues to watch in 2018.

Whether drawing on established financial models or pioneering innovative new structures, data sharing platforms must be ready to face the challenge of sustainability if they seek to maximize their full potential. Vivli is committed to providing a global platform for data sharing grounded in financial sustainability so that researchers can reap the benefits of our innovative approach for years to come. Vivli Team Demonstrates Global Clinical Trial Data Sharing Platform at the MRCT Annual Meeting

Vivli team members rounded off a successful year with a live demonstration of the Vivli Clinical Trial Data Sharing Platform at the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center Annual Meeting . Executive Director Rebecca Li and Julie Wood, Director of External Affairs, shared the stage with Technical Lead Ida Sim and Paul Slater, Microsoft CTO of Life Sciences, and Pablo Gazmuri, Blue Metal to discuss the current progress of the project, the opportunities that Vivli will afford to researchers, and the timeline to the project’s official launch. The live demo showed the technical progress of the project and was completed a month ahead of schedule.

Vivli is a non-profit organization that is establishing a global data-‐sharing and analytics platform to serve all elements of the international research community. It acts as a neutral broker between data contributor and data user and the wider data sharing community. Vivli is establishing an independent data repository, in-depth search engine and a cloud-based analytics platform. We are working to provide the platform as well as harmonize the governance, policy and processes to make sharing data easier.  The ultimate aim of Vivli is to advance human health from the insights and discoveries gained by sharing and analyzing data.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Supports Vivli

Cambridge, Mass. – The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has awarded a grant to Vivli, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit, to support its work building a first-of-its-kind data sharing and analytics platform for clinical trial research. The innovative platform will include a data repository, analysis tools and a dynamic search engine. It will provide transparency and access to clinical research data from around the globe to break data out of existing silos. The ultimate aim of Vivli is to accelerate scientific discovery to improve human health.

“Researchers, study participants, and doctors rely on clinical research studies to determine which therapies are safe and effective. It is therefore critical that they are able to easily share what they are learning and to build upon each other’s data,” said Betsy Myers, program director for medical research at DDCF. “We are proud to support Vivli’s work building a secure platform that allows and encourages researchers to do so, and excited for how it will ultimately support the quality of medical treatment and patients’ lives.”

On Dec. 6, Vivli will be offering the first public sneak peek of the platform at the MRCT Annual Meeting at the Harvard Faculty Club in Cambridge, Mass. This important milestone moves Vivli one step closer to completing the platform build.

“We are grateful for the timely support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation,” said Dr. Rebecca Li, Vivli Executive Director. “This support allows us to quickly move to launching the platform in 2018. The foundation’s financial backing shows that it supports the work and direction of Vivli.”

Helmsley Charitable Trust Backs Vivli with Funding to Deliver Data-Sharing Platform

Cambridge, MA—November 14, 2017—Vivli has secHelmsley logoured funding from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to deliver an innovative data-sharing platform, which will make it easier to find, host and analyze clinical trial data across disease areas to accelerate medical research. This funding will augment what Vivli has already received and ensure that the platform is available for public use in 2018.

“We are extremely grateful for the support and partnership offered by the Helmsley Charitable Trust,” said Rebecca Li, Vivli Executive Director. “This was the additional funding that we needed to complete the initial build of the Vivli platform. It will allow us to secure the infrastructure and operations to move us through the launch and beyond as we continue to expand the services offered.”

“Sharing data is critical to driving new scientific discoveries. We believe the Vivli platform will benefit global researchers by combining data sets across disease areas and breaking down traditional barriers of access,” said Stephanie Cuskley, CEO of the Helmsley Charitable Trust. “We hope to encourage others to build data sharing into their grantmaking. Ensuring that studies are listed on Vivli is one way we envision accelerating medical advances to improve patients’ lives.”

The Vivli platform’s central feature is a powerful search engine. Researchers will be able to make one combined data request on the platform for multiple data sets. Once the data requests are approved, researchers will be able to combine and analyze datasets within the Vivli platform using statistical tools.

“We are very aware that we stand on the shoulders of all of those who have gone before us in their work to promote and make data sharing a reality,” said Li. “Our intention is that Vivli will support and amplify the work of existing data repositories by making those data sets easier to find and analyze, thereby allowing researchers to drive new insights and discoveries.”
